A percentage of the house's theoretical take.
Rakeback isn't a percentage of what you wagered — it's a percentage of what the house's edge would theoretically keep from that wager. Bet $1,000 on a game with a 1% edge and the house's theoretical take is $10; a 3.5% rakeback rate returns 3.5% of that $10, or $0.35, regardless of whether the individual bet won or lost.
This is why rakeback tracks total volume wagered, not your win/loss record — it's paid on turnover, not on losses, which is also why it's sometimes described (imprecisely) as a "loss rebate." It isn't one; you earn it whether that session was a winning one or not.
Notice how small that last figure is relative to the house edge itself — rakeback softens the edge, it doesn't come close to erasing it. At this example's numbers the effective edge drops from 1.00% to about 0.9650%, still solidly negative.

Progress is permanent and based on lifetime total wagered — it never resets, and every bet on every game counts toward it. These wager thresholds are consistently cited across independent trackers; the rakeback rate at each tier is not, which is why it's left as an adjustable input on the calculator above rather than baked into this table.

One cited source gives a single flat 3.5% rakeback rate across every VIP tier, with a full worked formula attached. Other trackers describe a tier-scaled rate starting around 10% at Bronze and climbing toward 20%+ at the highest Diamond tiers — a meaningfully different number at the same tier. We couldn't reach Stake's own help documentation directly to settle which is current, so this page doesn't pick a side.
The calculator above defaults to the 3.5% figure since it's the one source that published a complete formula alongside it, not because it's confirmed more accurate than the tier-scaled figures. Treat the rakeback output as directional — drag the rate input to whatever your own account's confirmed VIP tier actually pays, which you can check directly in Stake's own VIP or rewards dashboard.
What's not in dispute: the formula's shape (wagered × edge% × rate%) and the 15 wager thresholds above, which multiple independent sources agree on closely.
